Pay the Piper is a quartet based out of Plymouth, NH. The band has roots at Plymouth State University where they started off playing house party’s and other college events. Over the past few years they have been playing shows all over the North East. The Piper merges reggae, rock, and funk to amass an arsenal of grooves to stimulate the senses. The band performs an illustrious amount of original material as well as fan favorite covers. The band has been creating a huge buzz throughout New England and is constantly playing new venues to spread the word. The band released their first EP “The Life and Times of Mel Fishland” in 2005 featuring “Beantown” and “Pine tree”. They just finished up their long awaited studio effort “Get Some”. PTP has a strong loyal fan base that brings energy everywhere they go.

NY Sextet Tours U.S. in Eco-Friendly Van

Falmouth, MA - On Friday, June 26th, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad performs at Grumpy's Pub. GPGDS will be playing at Rothbury, Reggae On The Rocks, and Wakarusa this summer.

The sextet recently had their touring van converted to run on waste vegetable oil.

GPGDS played 180 shows in 2008, including performances at Mountain Jam, and Wakarusa. 2007 highlights include a three-week stint in Jamaica, numerous national tours, and a concert at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC). After a funk-filled Memorial Day weekend, we are getting back to the blues this weekend with Fatwall Jack featuring Erica Rodney on Friday and Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish on Saturday.

From a review of the CD "Girl Next Door:" Fatwall Jack is undoubtedly one of the best blues bands in New England. The guitar work by Pete Henderson and the horn work of the Cadillac Horns tops it all off. Buy this CD, and then check this band out live when the hit your area!

(Pumpkin Head Ted (PHT) was formed on a Friday in 1994 to fill in for a band that had cancelled for the next night in a downtown New Bedford, MA venue.The band was an instant hit and became the Saturday night house band for the next several years.

During this period the band went through many changes but stayed true to an acoustic format while experimenting with many styles.

PHT was originally: Tom Short on flute, saxes and vocals; John Nieman on guitar and vocals; and Matt Ryckebusch on bass. Later it expanded to include: Jason Smith on washboard, percussion, guitar and vocals; vocalist Kathy Crowley; Doug Tuxworth on sax; and Pat Pounds on mandolin.

The Pumpkin Head Ted band was named after Ted Kennedy whose politics, drinking ability and large Jack-O-Lantern like noggin we all admire greatly!

After a well deserved weekend off last weekend, we are ready to jump into the winter season with a great weekend of music.

The band can lay down subtle, soulful dance grooves, rip into a hot Texas Blues or venture into a jazzy improvisational jam at the drop of a hat. The consistent factors are incredible energy, a deep rhythmic pocket and maximum audience enjoyment. The band draws on the diversity of each member’s unique musical voice and style."

Later on that night we are fortunate to host two great entertainers. Sara Leketa will be opening for the Big D himself - Don McCloskey. This up and coming artist is known for her haunting melodies, soulful voice, and cutting lyrics. And finally, Don McCloskey (http://www.enormousd.com/) hasn't played a gig on Cape for a few months, and we are happy to welcome him back to Falmouth! From his myspace page: "I write songs and plays shows all over the country. Some of my songs are about love and life, some of them are about death, some of them are about Glockenspiels and Discount Ho's. They're mostly about whatever I'm thinking about or feeling at any given moment.

I've recorded two full length albums "Bombs Over Bristol" and "Northern Liberties" and have released them on my own label, Lemon Hill Records. I was lucky enough to play with great musicians on both of these albums including G Love, Chuck Treece (Bad Brains, Billy Joel) and Tom Spiker (Kelis, Brentwood Estates). Some of the songs from these albums have gotten radio play all over the country and some have been featured in television and film including Michael Moore's Academy Award Winning documentary, "Bowling For Columbine." Other songs of mine have been featured on FX's situation comedy, "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" and MTV's "The Hills."

I've played all kind of shows from subways and streets to pubs, clubs and venues. I've been invited to play music festivals and have sold out shows in New York, Philly, Los Angeles and up and down both coasts. In addition to headlining my own shows I've been lucky enough to support nationally touring musical acts like G Love and Special Sauce and Donavon Frankenreiter.

And all of that has been great, but that's not why I writes my songs. I write them for myself. But I don't mind if you listen. So take a listen and enjoy.... "

Maybe you think summer is over and it's time to roll up the sidewalks and close all the shutters until next summer. Well, my friend, you are very wrong! This October and November are going to be a pretty amazing time to see some great bands at Grumpy's.

This weekend has the great Sweet Melissa with Chris Stovall Brown returning for their monthly gig. As a special guest for this show, up and coming Cape Cod artist Sara Leketa will be opening. Rock? Jam Band? Reggae? Whatever you are in the moods for, these guys have it in their playlist. From their website:

Pay The Piper is a New England based band that was formed in March of 2005 in Plymouth, NH. Its members blend a smooth and eclectic style of funk, rock, and reggae. PTP's on stage energy, catchy songs, improvisational range, and tight covers keep the crowd dancing all night long.

The band has roots at Plymouth State University where they started off playing house party’s and other college events. Over the past few years they have been playing shows all over the North East. The Piper merges reggae, rock, and funk to amass an arsenal of grooves to stimulate the senses. The band performs an illustrious amount of original material as well as fan favorite covers. The band has been creating a huge buzz throughout New England and is constantly playing new venues to spread the word. The band released their first EP “The Life and Times of Mel Fishland” in 2005 featuring “Beantown” and “Pine tree”. They just finished up their long awaited studio effort “Get Some”. PTP has a strong loyal fan base that brings energy everywhere they go. Pay the Piper has grown enormously in its first two years and is always looking to play a new show and brew up a new PTP supporter.

There is a lot going on at The Pub this weekend! It is time again for our big benefit for the Jimmy Gahan Foundation (www.jimmygahan.org/) . It is hard to believe that this is the 6th year for this event. Through the tireless work of the Gahan family and countless friends and volunteers, over $115,000 has been raised for scholarships and gifts to youth sports and youth activities in several communities including Falmouth, Mashpee & Dudley, Massachusetts.
2008 could be the biggest fundraiser yet with donations of signed baseballs, art, restaurant certificates, antiques and jewelry.

This event kicks off this afternoon with the great local entertainers The Med Hedz. There will be food available and the preview of the silent auction items will begin about 5pm.

Sprung from the basements of Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA in 2003, Spiritual Rez, known for their unique sound and high-energy live performances, have been writing music, touring tirelessly, and just independantly released their second album "Rising In The East". Not just another Berklee bred reggae ensemble, Spiritual Rez combines raw energy with funk melodies and rhythmic harmonies to create a full, lush and unique sound. OK, Sorry about being MIA last week. Two sick kids and a long, holiday weekend definitely got the better of me! I hope you had happy 4th of July, and that you are ready to dance off all of those extra beers, burgers, and ice creams you ate this weekend.

Well, I guess summer is officially here. It seems like Falmouth filled up overnight! Between the new Farmer's Market and Art Market, the ArtsAlive Festival on the Library Lawn, and the Strawberry Festival at St. Barnabus, Main Street has been packed all weekend.

Grumpy's had a great weekend of fantastic entertainment from the Memphis Rockabilly Band and Sweet Melissa. The Pub was full all night, and a great time was had by all...

Memphis Rockabilly Band Tonight

The Memphis Rockabilly Band has been playing gigs together all over the US and Europe since 1978.

From their website:

The Memphis Rockabilly Band was formed by Jeff Spencer and Bill Coover in 1978. The band quickly became one of the most popular bands in Boston and New England, as well as other destinations up and down the east coast. MRB traveled to Europe in 1981 and 1982 and recorded for France’s Big Beat Records. The band also released an album on Blind Pig Records in 1986.

Between 1979 and 1989, MRB was privileged to play with artists such as Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roomful of Blues, Duke Robillard, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Link Wray, Jack Scott, The Persuasions, Etta James and others.

Carl Perkins called them “the best rockabilly band I have ever seen.”

Jeff Spencer and Bill Coover again teamed up in 2005 to create a new incarnation of The Memphis Rockabilly Band. The band now includes bassist Paul Justice and drummer Alan Sheinfeld. Memphis Rockabilly Band has returned to Europe after a 23-year absence, playing to crowds of adoring fans, and establishing themselves at the forefront of the American roots music scene in Europe. As in the past, the band’s repertoire includes original and cover songs drawn from rockabilly, surf instrumentals, blues, rock & roll, hillbilly and rhythm and blues. Memphis Rockabilly Band has always been known as a great dance band and a favorite of swing dancers, and that tradition continues.

Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish play on Friday

Ready to dance? Come on in and see Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish at Grumpy's on Friday. If you've seen them before, you know what I'm talking about! These guys have a way of getting even the most reluctant dancer to get up and have a good time on the dance floor.

Formed in 1991, the band has evolved through many incarnations, five cds, trips around the world and mostly the joys of playing a lot of music on Martha's Vineyard where most of them live... Jeremy has been with the band for most of its life - since the summer of '93.

The band started out as a four piece with no piano, became a five piece for several years, and then returned to a four piece configuration, this time with no bass, and it's been that way for almost 10 years... Paul arrived from Texas in 1997 after a famous stint with The Red Devils in LA. He had gone back to Denton and Austin to form his own band with his friend and fellow guitar master Johnny Moeller, and Johnny Hoy found him at the right moment and asked him to come up and play with us. With a couple of breaks, he's been with the band since he got here. Chris came aboard in 2000 and he and Jeremy have been the rhythm section all along. He stays around Boston - we can't make him move down here. A real city boy...

Here's a review of our cd, Film Noir Angel' from Blues Revue, March 2007: The first release in five years from this Martha's Vineyard-based band is a self-produced, self-released affair featuring four originals and 10 diverse covers that reveal an affinity for rockabilly, country and traditional blues. The album's blues tracks - Little Walter's "High Temperature", J.B. Hutto's "Hip-Shakin," Lightnin' Slim's "Nothin' But but the Devil," and Bo Diddley's "Cadillac" - are solid. It's the other covers that are the most surprising, and despite their sources, they don't stray far from the blues. The most anomalous tune is a "Sloop John B" cover that features wistful harp and Tom Waits-like vocals. Hoy channels Jerry Lee Lewis on Stephen Foster's "Old Black Joe," which starts lugubriously before bursting into pants-on-fire boogie typical of the Killer. For the great Charlie Rich Blues, "Don't Put No Headstone on My Grave," Hoy sings with the requisite blend of resignation and weary defiance. Hank Williams' "You Win Again" is transformed into a West Side shuffle, and Arthur Alexander's "Sally Sue Brown" receives an Excello-style swamp blues treatment. The Mavericks' "All you Ever Do Is Bring Me Down" is straight honky-tonk. Three Hoy originals ("Shack in the Back," "Throw Down Your Hammer," and the title track) are Southern rockers remiscent of Little Feat, while "Big Stacka Darlin'" evokes the twangy bayou rockabilly of Dale Hawkins. Hoy is a consumate harpist whose brawny tone owes much to Little Walter, and his vocals recall Waits' world-weary grittiness and garbled enunciation. But it's Jeremy Berlin's scintillating, two-fisted piano work that steals the show. Fans of the Nighthawks, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and the Blasters will find much to enjoy on 'Film Noir Angel.' Though we would take issue with some of the characterizations, we're happy with the good review!

Jimmy Gahan Foundation

The next benefit for the Jimmy Gahan Foundation will be held at Grumpy's Pub on August 15th and 16th. This is an amazing event with a huge silent auction, fantastic music, and delicious food donated by some of Falmouth's most popular restaurants.

There was just a very good article in the Falmouth and Bourne Bulletin full of information about the amazing work the Gahan's have done since they lost their son, Jimmy, in the Station Nightclub Fire. "What the foundation is about, says Jimmy’s father, is keeping alive the spirit of a young man who made friendship a core value in his life and encouraged others to do the same. Five years later, it’s a promise that’s been kept."

Troy Clarkson, a blogger for the Falmouth Bulletin had this to say in his post on May 21:"When a family is able to rebound from the impacts of a horrific tragedy, it is touching and noteworthy. When that family is able to make a lasting impact on its community as a direct result of that tragedy, it is truly remarkable. Jim Gahan, father of the late Jimmy Gahan, who died in the Station Nightclub fire in Rhode Island in 2003, made an appearance before the selectmen recently to announce a $10,000 donation to the Recreation Department for work on the new athletic fields on Sandwich Road. The Jimmy Gahan Charitable Foundation has now raised and donated over $100,000 to Falmouth students and activities in Jimmy’s name. All of the money raised for the foundation goes directly to its charities. This is truly amazing work. If you are interested in donating or getting involved, contact the foundation at: www.jimmygahan.org."

Many people say that Carol "Ma" Gahan is the heart and soul of Grumpy's. That's a fact I think we can all agree on. Please consider donating an item for the auction and coming down to Grumpy's for an incredible event.

Right on the heels of his 17-date Summer Tour announcement, George Gritzbach and his band will be at Grumpy's tonight - Show starts at 9:30pm. Free tickets are available at a few businesses around Falmouth and Woods Hole.

What distinguishes our live performances is a healthy dose of slide guitar and the addition of racked harmonica, as well as high quality original compositions. We play up-tempo material with the addition of a ballad or two per set. We consider ourselves a high-energy R&B dance band. That being said, we have the flexibility to go unplugged and play an acoustic set for a concert or coffee house crowd. At this time, we go by the George Gritzbach Band. "

"This summer promises to be another great run of shows," Gritzbach said. "We’ll be playing some Memphis and New Orleans funk inspired material and a lot of old-school Chicago blues standards. There is an appetite on the Cape for some hard rocking music and we aim to fill that bill."
Notable appearances for Gritzbach include a July 11th appearance at the Reggae, Rhythm & Blues Series at Aselton Park in and an August 17 appearance at the venerable North River Blues Festival in Marshfield, MA. Gritzbach and his band will also play multiple shows at the Onset Bay Blues Café, The Wellfleet Beachcomber and Grumpy’s in Falmouth.
