The Ramblin' Souls TONIGHT!

Is it really August already?! Hard to believe the summer is flying by... There is always great music to be heard at Grumpy's, but this next week is really exceptional. Starting things off tonight, we have a great band from Boston playing their first gig at Grumpy's. The Ramblin' Souls were recommended to us by our good friends (waving to John and Denise! ) from Quincy. Click on the post title whichs links to their myspace page to listen to a few songs. Blue-collar blues and railroad Rock n Roll are what the Ramblin' Souls are all about. Their wide range of musical influences include: Americana, Old School Blues, Country, 50s & 60s Rock n Roll, a little Grateful Dead, and a healthy dose of Chuck Berry. It is this influential melting-pot that makes them a rare band on the Boston scene. The Souls' tight, live sound and high energy shows keeps their fans hungry enough to come out week after week and tear up the dance floor. Look out for the Ramblin' Souls as they roll through your town.

Kim Trusty & The Soul Food Kitchen Band 7/18

The dynamic and multifaceted Kim Trusty is a powerful and diverse vocalist, songwriter, guitarist and actress. Kim draws on jazz, rhythm & blues, vocal improvisation, roots, rock and undemanding lyrics, bringing her life, heart and work experiences into unforgettable and unique performances.

Trusty, who began singing more than 30 years ago in an all-black Baptist church in rural Pennsylvania, has evolved into one of the hottest acts on the stage today. The talented vocalist, songwriter, guitarist, and actress has appeared on stages from New Orleans to Montreal. Her latest CD, “Sweet Novena,” a tribute to her late grandmother, was released in September 2005.

Trusty is a Berklee College of Music graduate and now lives in Providence.

She has opened for Paula Cole, Taj Mahal,Rick Danko and Richie Havens. Kim’s performance style is completely unique and unforgettable to the senses. With a captivating stage presence, soulful lyrics and a showstopping voice, Kim Trusty’s act keeps you on the edge of your seat (if you’re not dancing).

Kim and her Soul Food Kitchen Band are playing at Grumpy's tomorrow night, Friday, 7/18, at 9:30 pm. There is a $5.00 cover at the door, but you may be able to pick a some free tickets around town. Try either of the Coffee Obsessions (Falmouth and Woods Hole) and the Woods Hole Market.

OK, Sorry about being MIA last week. Two sick kids and a long, holiday weekend definitely got the better of me! I hope you had happy 4th of July, and that you are ready to dance off all of those extra beers, burgers, and ice creams you ate this weekend.

The Commonwealth will be back again this Thursday. These guys played to a full house last week, and they, once again, did not disappoint. Take a trip over to Grumpy's this week to check them out. You never know who you'll see or what you'll hear.

On an entirely different note, is it me or does the Melody Tent have a few good bands playing this summer? I guess I always associated it with things like The Regeneration Tour (come on, The Human League, Belinda Carlisle, and Flock of Seagulls!?). But this week moe. (http://www.myspace.com/moe) is playing on Thursday and Friday. The on 7/18 Gov't Mule (http://www.mule.net/). And 8/2 Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival (http://www.derektrucks.com/index.html) . It will be very cool to see these bands play in a small venue like the Melody Tent rather than the huge festivals. Hope to see you there!

They will be back again on Thursday, so if you haven't stopped by to hear this great band, you are missing out! They put on another excellent, high-energy show last Thursday and will continue to play at Grumpy's each Thursday this month.

Due to the 4th of July, there will not be a band playing this Friday. Instead of getting stuck in traffic after the fireworks, how about stopping in for a pint and a game of pinball or pool?

Memphis Rockabilly Band Tonight

The Memphis Rockabilly Band has been playing gigs together all over the US and Europe since 1978.

From their website:

The Memphis Rockabilly Band was formed by Jeff Spencer and Bill Coover in 1978. The band quickly became one of the most popular bands in Boston and New England, as well as other destinations up and down the east coast. MRB traveled to Europe in 1981 and 1982 and recorded for France’s Big Beat Records. The band also released an album on Blind Pig Records in 1986.

Between 1979 and 1989, MRB was privileged to play with artists such as Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roomful of Blues, Duke Robillard, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Link Wray, Jack Scott, The Persuasions, Etta James and others.

Carl Perkins called them “the best rockabilly band I have ever seen.”

Jeff Spencer and Bill Coover again teamed up in 2005 to create a new incarnation of The Memphis Rockabilly Band. The band now includes bassist Paul Justice and drummer Alan Sheinfeld. Memphis Rockabilly Band has returned to Europe after a 23-year absence, playing to crowds of adoring fans, and establishing themselves at the forefront of the American roots music scene in Europe. As in the past, the band’s repertoire includes original and cover songs drawn from rockabilly, surf instrumentals, blues, rock & roll, hillbilly and rhythm and blues. Memphis Rockabilly Band has always been known as a great dance band and a favorite of swing dancers, and that tradition continues.

There's a little bit of everything this week at Grumpy's.

Tuesday Night is Dart Night at Grumpy's. Come on in with a couple friends and go head to head (or drink for drink...) with other like-minded folks. While you wait, there are always pool tables and a eclectic juke box to keep you occupied!

Thursday nights this summer, come on down and see The Commonwealth. They played a great gig last Thursday - their first time on stage at the Pub. This is a young band, and they have a great sound and a fun, energetic following. Come on down and support these guys! No Cover.

Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish play on Friday

Ready to dance? Come on in and see Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish at Grumpy's on Friday. If you've seen them before, you know what I'm talking about! These guys have a way of getting even the most reluctant dancer to get up and have a good time on the dance floor.

Formed in 1991, the band has evolved through many incarnations, five cds, trips around the world and mostly the joys of playing a lot of music on Martha's Vineyard where most of them live... Jeremy has been with the band for most of its life - since the summer of '93.

The band started out as a four piece with no piano, became a five piece for several years, and then returned to a four piece configuration, this time with no bass, and it's been that way for almost 10 years... Paul arrived from Texas in 1997 after a famous stint with The Red Devils in LA. He had gone back to Denton and Austin to form his own band with his friend and fellow guitar master Johnny Moeller, and Johnny Hoy found him at the right moment and asked him to come up and play with us. With a couple of breaks, he's been with the band since he got here. Chris came aboard in 2000 and he and Jeremy have been the rhythm section all along. He stays around Boston - we can't make him move down here. A real city boy...

Here's a review of our cd, Film Noir Angel' from Blues Revue, March 2007: The first release in five years from this Martha's Vineyard-based band is a self-produced, self-released affair featuring four originals and 10 diverse covers that reveal an affinity for rockabilly, country and traditional blues. The album's blues tracks - Little Walter's "High Temperature", J.B. Hutto's "Hip-Shakin," Lightnin' Slim's "Nothin' But but the Devil," and Bo Diddley's "Cadillac" - are solid. It's the other covers that are the most surprising, and despite their sources, they don't stray far from the blues. The most anomalous tune is a "Sloop John B" cover that features wistful harp and Tom Waits-like vocals. Hoy channels Jerry Lee Lewis on Stephen Foster's "Old Black Joe," which starts lugubriously before bursting into pants-on-fire boogie typical of the Killer. For the great Charlie Rich Blues, "Don't Put No Headstone on My Grave," Hoy sings with the requisite blend of resignation and weary defiance. Hank Williams' "You Win Again" is transformed into a West Side shuffle, and Arthur Alexander's "Sally Sue Brown" receives an Excello-style swamp blues treatment. The Mavericks' "All you Ever Do Is Bring Me Down" is straight honky-tonk. Three Hoy originals ("Shack in the Back," "Throw Down Your Hammer," and the title track) are Southern rockers remiscent of Little Feat, while "Big Stacka Darlin'" evokes the twangy bayou rockabilly of Dale Hawkins. Hoy is a consumate harpist whose brawny tone owes much to Little Walter, and his vocals recall Waits' world-weary grittiness and garbled enunciation. But it's Jeremy Berlin's scintillating, two-fisted piano work that steals the show. Fans of the Nighthawks, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and the Blasters will find much to enjoy on 'Film Noir Angel.' Though we would take issue with some of the characterizations, we're happy with the good review!

This is the only time the band will be here in June, so come on down to kick off the summer right!!
